Cat-Whisperers: A workshop on Big Cats
This winter, send your kids to the heart of wild India to learn about a host of wild animals that we have only been lucky to spot till now.
Early on Monday morning, we will be travelling out to Satpura. We would first take a train to Bhopal and then drive on from there.
On arrival we will check into the beautiful Reni Pani Jungle lodge. If there is still light, we will learn about camera trapping and set up camera traps in the buffer area of the Park.
This would be followed by dinner. An exciting day lies ahead.
A day filled with activities! This morning we will do an early morning walking safari through the jungle understanding the forest cover, and the importance of Panchmarhi Biosphere Reserve. We will also have a chance to get a closer look at the smaller things in the forest like butterflies, insects, trees, plants and tracks and signs.
In the second half, we will proceed towards our campsite and set up our camp under the guidance of Reni Pani’s naturalists. After the camp is set up we will go for a night safari in the buffer trying to view nocturnal wildlife. Keep your ears pricked for alarm calls that may signal a leopard!
We would spend the night in tents inside the jungle. These tents would be basic camps so that your ears are to the ground and you hear all sorts of sounds made by the animals at night – from the hooves of deer to the calling of an owl. Toilet tents and food would be provided. So all you’ll need to carry is a day-pack with change for the night.
The first half of the day will be spent hiking through the jungle understanding animal behaviour, territory marking, scat and pug-mark identification techniques. After brunch, we will return to the lodge. During the second half we will visit forest villages and interact with locals understanding human-animal conflict. In the evening, there will be a feedback session listing challenges and possible solutions. We will also see the results of the camera trapping before dinner.
This morning we will do a jeep safari searching for iconic species in Satpura like Sloth Bear, Leopard, Wild Dogs and if lucky even the tiger. After breakfast, we would drive to Bhopal for the train back to Delhi.
