Shekhawati: Cycling Past An Open Air Art Gallery
Cycling in Shekhawati region is a unique experience with frescos and mural paintings depicting the tales of lovers, religion, and folk mythology enchanting you through the quaint towns.
This short four-day cycling trip focuses on exploring the artistically rich lives in historical towns of Shekhawati region, popularly known as the “open air art gallery”.
The first day starts with a ride to Nawalgarh, a town founded in 1737 CE. Spend a day and a night to explore the surroundings dotted with impressive fresco paintings and interesting mansions.
Ride through the countryside next morning to reach Mandawa taking a stop on the way at Dundlod. See the Bhagirath Mal Goenka Haveli famous for its mirror work on the windows and beautiful cenotaphs. Stop at Mukundgarh to visit some temples before cycling up to the Badalgarh Fort for a view of the city. After spending the night at Mandawa set off next morning for a guided tour of an old mansion and know of the efforts gone behind the beautiful restoration by French artist Nadine Le Prince.
In the afternoon, ride to Churu village which is called The Gateway of Thar. Explore Churu and see local artisans at work, followed by a tour of the farms and an interaction with the farming community. See some farms on the outskirts on the last day before departing for Delhi in the afternoon.
Day 1: Meeting and assistance on arrival and transfer to hotel.
Overnight in Delhi
Day 2: Experience a cycling tour of Delhi visiting a 12th century step well, India Gate War Memorial. Ride through Central Delhi, past the President’s palace. After breakfast, leave for guided tour of old Delhi by a rickshaw and later visit a beautiful garden tomb of Mughal emperor Humayun and Qutab Minar, the tower of victory.
Overnight in Delhi
Day 3: Ride from Loharu railway station to Nawalgarh. Explore the town and beautiful mansions laden with fresco paintings.
Day 4: Start for Mandawa. En-route stop at Dundlod for visits to Bhagirath Mal Goenka Haveli and Badalgarh Fort.
Day 5: Ride to Fatehpur for a guided tour for an old mansion learning about restoration done by the French artist Nadine Le Prince.
Day 6: Reach Churu to explore the farms and meet the farming community. Cycle to the dunes for a camel ride followed by a desert bonfire and dinner.
Day 7: Visit some more farms on the outskirts before heading to board the train for Delhi.
