Himachal Pradesh: The land of the Monal
The Great Himalayan National Park is the ideal combination of a trek and a wildlife safari. Apart from the plethora of birdlife, the park almost guarantees you mammal sighting.
What iO thinks
The park holds very interesting vegetation like the cobra plant, and also a host of Himalayan Tahr, and musk deer. Leopards abound. While it is very difficult to spot one, you will see a langur it has killed or some scat. Travel in October, and you will have a better chance of spotting the Monal and the Himalayan Brown bear loitering in the golden grass. You have to be fit though so that you don’t sprain yourself on the steep climbs. A 5k run is a good test of your endurance as well.
